The central figure is an American businessman who has been doing a great deal of soul-searching. He has just lost his wife to another man and he contemplates many worthless plans so that his business associates wonder about his stability. Now he's determined to take a look at his life with a new slant but not without a stop in his attic where objects of his past (a few of which haunt him) become strikingly real - too real. The strange tree-like form which is covered with rotting bark symbolizes humanity and it frightens him. The eggs are symbols emanating from a place no one but he knows and everyone but he is denied entry. A few are opening before his very eyes. The confused businessman's memory seems to restore some of his youthful optimism.
